This is The Book. Any time I had a paper to fill out, I made a copy for the book. Any document or evidence anyone suggested I bring with me is also in the book. That makes it a very important item.
I have my ticket. I have a place to live. Soon I will tell my students I am leaving. We wanted to do that this week, but there have been obstacles.
Always with the obstacles. Several have been solved, so the stress has almost gone away.

This fossil-laden limestone is a part of the San Jacinto monument. Everywhere we go in Texas, we see our past honored. In many places you will find memorials to past politicians, cultural icons, authors, and artists. Here, it is our ancient past coupled with an important part of our fight for independence
From October 2, 1835 to May 14, 1836, my fair state fought to gain its independence from Mexico. On March 6, 1836, Mexican troops stormed the Alamo and killed the combatants, who had been labeled as rebels. The tide turned on April 21, 1836, when the Texian army attacked General Santa Anna's men at San Jacinto. About half of the Mexican army was killed; the others were taken prisoner.
When I think about my state's history, I can't help but compare it to all the tales of independence we hear from other countries around the world. When is being a rebel a good thing? When do we support the other side?

The Texian Army was camped near here that spring in 1836. Our springs are wet and buggy. This makes me wonder about the mosquitos. Were they biting that night? Was it too cool yet to have mosquitos? What sort of insect repellant would the soldiers have used? Okay, that's easy - cigar smoke!
The water here is brackish. It is not too far from a source of fresh water. How would that have affected their motivation to fight? Their health? Today we have mechanical means of transporting water to our soldiers. I know that in the 19th century, they would have carried tanks of water in wagons drawn by mules. How do you carry enough water to take care of hundreds of men and animals?
I've heard people complain about how hard they have it. They need to consider the lives our ancestors led. They need to consider the lives lost in the past that have helped us live the lives we have now.
